Crawford Lake Field Trip
Our trip to Crawford lake could not have happened on a nicer day. The weather was bright and sunny and it was fantastic to be outside learning about the First Nations. We started with a forest hike before venturing into the longhouse recreation. Afterwards we played some lacrosse and did some crafting. A very busy day to learn new things and refresh what was covered in Social Studies last term. Click on each picture to see an expanded form.
Mme Clayton- May 8th Update
Summer is fast approaching and you can feel the energy outside and in the classroom! Before ending their Grade 3 year, the students will be attending many more exciting events here at school as well as writing the provincial EQAO test. Test dates this year are May 28th-30th. In French we will continue working on editing our work and practicing verbs.
Mme Clayton - April 3rd Update
French
In French, we have been working on editing our writing and using the core verbs (etre and avoir.) We have been practicing speaking French in class for all tasks but still need a few reminders! Genius Hour got off to a good start, all students have selected their question for their research. Watch for a form to come home to check out their plan for the project. |
Social Studies
In social studies we continue learning about the different physical regions in Ontario. In groups we will create short slideshows sharing our understanding before the quiz. Following this we will become experts on the different types of jobs available in Ontario by hosting a job fair! |
Math
In math we have finished up our 2D shape and 3D form units in Geometry. We are now going to cover location and movement of shapes. In Grade 3, this means exploring map directions, reflections, rotations and translations. After this we are going to focus on some EQAO practice! |
Pizza Perfect Field Trip!
Our field trip to Grand River Raceway was such a fun experience! The kids rotated through centres learning about the ways Ontario farms and farmers contribute to making one of their favourite foods- pizza! One of the highlights of the trip was seeing the cows and pigs, which made quite a racket. Check out some of the pictures below:

Quick Update.....
What an exciting Thursday we had before our long weekend! We said good bye to our principal, Mr. Fracas in a beautiful assembly where our very own drum line played, many special friends and family spoke and children from our school shared their fond memories and gave Mr. Fracas lots of advice on retirement!!!!
The Grade 3s were also very fortunate to have a coding workshop called Mimetics come in and work with them last block! Every student got a chromebook to work on a their very own robot to program. Students learned how to write simple codes to make their robots move and even got them to draw a picture! What an amazing (and free) experience for the students...check it out!

Marc le magicien-
Unfortunately not all parents consented to having our plays on the class website. Because of this, the plays had to be edited to fit onto FreshGrade (some audio removed and quality dropped.)
Hopefully the videos work on all devices now and everyone can finally see (and hear!) the hard work that the Gr3s put into their French plays.
Mme Clayton French Updates- February 26th
Math
In math, we are finishing up 2D shapes (sorting, describing, identifying angles, parallel lines and 'clubs'.) We will be delving into 3D shapes and trying the various ways we can recreate them using STEM materials and found objects. |
Social Studies
In social studies, we are beginning to explore the political regions found within Ontario (municipalities and cities.) We will be looking at the physical regions that also exist and the weird and wonderful jobs that can occur all over Ontario due to urban/rural environments. |
French
In french, we have just finished up our Olympic unit where everyone picked an unknown sport to research and write a short paragraph on. We will be reviewing verbs shortly and will begin a Genius Hour project following Google's 80/20 concept. We have also been practicing a song "Francais!Francais! (found on YouTube) that we will record and potentially perform for the whole school! |
Olympic Fun
Outdoor Fun
Last week with all of the snow, for QDPA we went out to the snow hill behind the school! The kids had so much fun climbing, exploring and sliding down the hill! Check it out! Mrs. Chalmers
Special Visitor
Yesterday we had a special visitor come to speak with the Grade 3s about weather and natural forces. Lindsay Morrison from CTV, joined us for an hour at the end of our day and spoke to everyone about how different weather patterns effect our everyday life. She explained her job as a weather person for the news channel, showed us pictures of different forces in nature and talk about how they impacted the world and even showed us a clip of her on TV talking about weather. The kids were so attentive and asked lots of great questions! Big thank you to Mr. Prekup for arranging this wonderful experience!
Drama
We just finished up a fun drama unit....and the kids loved it! They cheered every time they saw drama on the schedule!
We played lots of different drama games, which were a lot of fun and created a lot of laughs and giggles.
We ended our unit by reading a book called Cloudland, about a boy that falls off a cliff and the "cloud people" save him and entertain him in Cloudland. The students created a tableaux inspired by the book and finally created a short skit about what would happen if Albert was not allowed to leave Cloudland. They did great, check out their tableaux below:

English Update (Jan 15)
What a great start to 2018!
The students and I spoke about new year's resolutions, and read a story called "Squirrel's New Year's Resolution" to help solidfy our understanding. The students were then asked to come up with a goal for home and one for school! The children were so honest and insightful, that I posted them for others to read! I will be sending home their balloon on Friday to share their thinking and goals for home!

Science Update
We have been very busy in science learning about different types of forces.
We launched our unit investigating what a force is....which we quickly discovered was a push or pull that causes an object to move, stop moving or change direction.
From there, we brainstormed all of the different types of forces that we know and we came up with the following list:
Each week we have been conducting experiments to explore each force.
Exploring static electricity was vey exiciting, as we started by making some "ghosts" dance using a balloon!

Social Studies
In Social Studies we are completing the final weeks of our first strand. We will be starting a short research project to fill in the final bits about a pioneer's daily life in Canada. |
Mme Schnurr Update
Welcome back. We have had a good start to our first week back. We made a flip book of what we want and what we hope for 2018! We will also be doing some writing about winter. We created a winter scene in art while talking about foreground, middle ground and background and the principal of design; Value. IN math we are continuing on and finishing up Addition and Subtraction, using a variety of strategies. We are working on numbers as large as 3 digits!
Home reading volunteer
Our school is in need of a home reading volunteer for Monday and Wednesday mornings. If you are able to help us out please contact Mrs Oswald at the school or via email [email protected]

This week has been a week of fun and learning! The students published their second piece of writing for their Grade 3 portfolios and we had a publishing party with cookies and juice. We read a story called "How to Catch an Elf" and everyone had so many stories about their Elf on a Shelf that they did some elf writing. Lastly, we had our final STEM challenge of 2017 and constructed a trap to catch an Elf. The kids were so excited to design, build and share! We also watched 2 of my favourite holiday classics: Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (can you believe they came out in the 60s). Check out some of our creative Elf Traps....
Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday season and a safe and relaxing New Year.
See you back on Monday January 8th!
Mme.Clayton Update Dec 4
Math
In math, we have finished up our unit on time. We have just started our unit on perimeter and area. This unit extends from our measuring length unit and should wrap up shortly before the holiday break. In Grade 3, the students are expected to find perimeter using centimetres and graph paper. They also need to find area using graph paper and using polygons covering a surface. |
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we continue to learn about the journey and experiences of the pioneers in early Canada. The students have many great questions about what objects were used in the past. |
French
In French, we continue to add details and length to our journals. The students are getting very good at using the class resources at their disposal and responding to feedback.
Our play, Marc le magicien will be presented in late January. We continue to practice 1 or 2 times a week together whether in groups or 1-1. I encourage all students to read at home at least once a week. This helps focus on fluency and 'natural sounding' speech. Students are not expected to memorize their lines but this added touch does help keep the audience engaged and the focus remain on voice expression.

Halloween STEM
Halloween was such a wonderful day....everyone looked fabulous in their costumes! The students went on a Halloween parade through the school to show off their wonderful costumes (their last one, next year in Grade 4 they will get to see all the primary students in the parade)!!!
In Room 15 we were challenged with a STEM activity! The students had to build a pumpkin launcher! Together we watched videos to inspire us and then we got into groups and using the materials provided (cups, spoons, popsicle sticks, elastics and masking tape) they built their creation. After everyone was done we tested our launchers and launched our pumpkins (candy ones!!!)!

November 6th- Clayton Update
Math- In math we are beginning to explore reading time to the nearest 5 minutes. This involves both analog and digital clocks with attention to AM (du matin) and PM (du soir.) The grade 3s have enjoyed sharing about their daily schedule within a 24hr block on the weekend. So much play time with friends and technology!
Social Studies- We have concluded our mini-strand on First Nations and will be learning about first contact and reasoning behind the first settlers choices for moving to Canada. Do you have any unique immigration stories to share? Share them with your child are we will be writing journals from the point of pioneer children and any first hand experience of moving to a new place is great background!
French- We have assigned roles in our French play and will begin weekly time blocks for practice and exploration. Our journals continue to improve with more and more use of the Word Wall and personal opinion. Students are encouraged to use the entire 30 minute period to revise, edit and use new words. In grade 3, 3-4 lines is the minimum but all students are capable of sharing many more great ideas.

French Play Begins!
We are beginning to explore the fantastic play "Marc le magicien." As a class we will be trying out the new words and expressions. We will be informally practicing and finding the 'just right' role in the play before groups are assigned. The hope is that all the hard work and time the students put in will result in a final product to share with their families! I will be uploading a PDF of the play so you may practice at home if you wish. Stay tune for updates!-Mme Clayton

French - Schnurr update!
French
We are working on our reading, making connections to stories we read to together and starting to do this independently. I have also been reading one on one with each child and we will begin FRENCH home reading in the next week or two. Stay tuned for a permission form to come home in your child’s planner. IN writing, we are drawing pictures to inspire our writing. We then had our learning buddies help us build vocabulary lists so we would have a bank of words to use when writing. This week we will actually begin writing our story. In grade 3, I expect 3-4 sentences only. The students will then share their stories orally with peers to get some feedback and make some simple revisions to their writing. Look for pictures on Fresh Grade in about two weeks, when I will post their completed work! |
Math
We have been working on place value, skip counting, number patterns and basic addition. As well we continue to do math strings as a whole class on a regular basis. This is where we work as a team to solve math equations or we go around a circle and do skip counting or addition/subtraction questions. An example would be begin with 8, add 11 to it, and each student would add 11 to the previous number. Then we look for number patterns and discuss different ways we were able to add 11 so quickly/easily. We also learned how to play place value battleship! |
Fresh Grade
Dear Parents,
If you haven’t had a chance to send us your email address you are missing out on lots of great pictures, notes and marks for your child! This is where we are keeping all of that organzied. We would love to get you hooked up! 😊 Please send your email address in your child’s planner.

English Update October 15
Reading
In Reading, the Grade 3s have been very busy. They are experts at reading independently and they love to get lost in a good book.
As a class we were practicing sharing our thinking with our "talk partners" when books were read. We are starting a small mini unit on fables with a focus on retelling stories we have read. We started with exploring different fables from various countries and fables that are dual language! We then made a list of the characteristics of fables (e.g. short, animals as characters, has a moral or lesson). We will continue exploring different fables in our read alouds and during small group instruction. We have just started orally retelling what we have read. We started with the fable "The Tortoise and the Hare" and we are practicing retelling what we have read after independent reading. Stay tuned for more details as we deconstruct a written retell and create criteria we need when retelling stories. |
Writing
The Grade 3s are great author's. Their love of writing is evident every time we have writer's workshop.
We have introduced Author's Chair, which means 2 students get to read their writing to the class and get feedback on what they can do to improve and what the students liked about their writing. Our focus has been on generating ideas. We have spoken about how writers write about things they know and love, they create lists and we learned how to create a a web with details about our story to help us organize our thinking. Finally we spoke about how we are sometimes inspired by other writer's. We are reading "The Notebooks of Doom" and tried writing a page about a monster from the notebook! The kids LOVED this and they were so creative! Our second focus was on what makes a piece of writing "good". The children generated some great ideas that we will unpack as the term unfolds. This week and next we will work on taking one of our masterpieces through the writing cycle and publishing it. |
Science
We love science in Grade 3!
The students have been learning so much about soil....they will be experts!
We explored 3 different types of soil - clay, sand and loam. As any good scientists do, we recorded observations in our science books about the differences and similarities between them! We then brought in our own sample and compared it with our talk partners. It was amazing to see how different the soil samples are just in our own neighbourhood! Finally we took our soil sample and made a mud shake! Amazingly, it separated all of the different materials and the students recorded their learning in their books!
The students read a small article and learned about how air, water, wind and ice help to make soil and a second article about how animals use soil!
Onto erosion and composting before we end our investigation!

New Learning
The Grade 3s are diving deeper into the world of ‘les autochtones’ (First Nations) and they have learned some great new things about using nature to support a community. They have begin to lead their inquiry with questions about what was once used for many basic tasks.
In French, we have started weekly Boggle, with challenges for the most words and the ‘hidden word’! Feel free to find an app for Boggle or dig out a Boggle board game to challenge them in French.

French Learning buddies!
We have joined up with Mme Collee's and Mrs Fleiseg's grade 5/6 class for learning buddies! We will meet with them one period a week. We will begin by getting to know each other and reading to each other. We will then add more activities in as the year progresses.
LIBRARY DAY!
Grade 3's will have a dedicated library period every day 4. Please help your child remember to bring their books back on day 4's! Thanks!
Update in English for September 18
Reading
The children have settled in wonderfully and they are ready to start our regular routines in Grade 3!
This week was our first Caring Assembly as a whole school and we read 2 beautiful books. Because it is our 10 year anniversary, many of our Caring Assemblies will focus on Edna Staebler and bringing awareness of who she is and why are school is named after her. To support our school's initiative, we read a short biography about Edna Staebler to learn more about her. It was surprising how little the children initially knew about her! The students were amazed to learn about all of the wonderful things she has done and some of the interesting facts about her life (for example, she was fired from teaching because she took her kids out to do cartwheels). Next week we will be exploring growth and fixed mindset as well as talking about what we read. |
Writing
In Writing, the students continue to familiarize themselves with writer's workshop. We are learning where the tools are in the classroom (e.g. paper, pens) and the routines that we follow. Some of the criteria the children and I talked about was important for children to be successful when they write are:
We will continue to explore writer's workshop and how to generate ideas, the different forms of writing and author's chair! |
Science
What a fantastic week in Science......we launched our first investigation into Soil!
To start, the students brainstormed everything we already knew about Soil and then wrote down some questions we still had. One question that seemed to come up a lot was about animals in the soil. So we decided to enjoy the sunshine and go outside and dig up our gardens to do some investigations! It was fascinating to see all of the critters that live in the soil!

Scientists in School then paid us a visit (paid for by our principal.....thank you Mr. Fracas). The children travelled around to 5 different stations to explore all of the wonderful aspects of soil from our wonderful volunteers and Scientist Diane!
STEM Challenge
What a great bunch of Grade 3 students we have this year! They are all so eager to learn and participate in the fun activities that are planned!
Last week we participated in our first STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) challenge. Students were given a task with specific materials. Last Friday, the students were given tape, tin foil and pipe cleaners and were asked to make something creative. Before we started we spoke about how to work with a partner or in a group (collaboration). Students quickly mentioned that we have to
I put the students in groups of 2 or 3 laid out some materials and the kids got right to work. What great teamwork I saw and such creativity. The children had 5 minutes to plan, 20 minutes to build and then they shared their masterpieces!

Fresh Grade Update
So sorry parents, I misunderstood how Fresh Grade works. I am not able to send you an "access code" to gain access. I actually have to add your email address in, and it will send you a direct link email. However based on the new CASL legislation I can't ASK you for your email address. :)
So... if you would be INTERESTED in joining Fresh Grade to garner access to your child's marks, anecdotal notes, photos, etc and have access to the messaging system we will be using through Fresh Grade then you can VOLUNTEER your email address to us by writing it in your child's planner!
Thanks!

First Week is Done.....
Hello Everyone, it was so exciting to meet everyone last week....what a lovely bunch of students we have! Looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday for Meet the Teacher night from 6pm to 7pm!!!!
This year Mme Schnurr and I were given two 2/3 classes....this is because there are more than 20 Grade 2 students and the cap on primary classrooms is 20. Mme Schnurr and I have straightened out the 2 classes as much as possible. This means that the Grade 2 students are in one class and the Grade 3 students are in a different class. The students were thrilled when they heard this!
I (Mrs. Chalmers) have the Grade 2 students in the morning, and the Grade 3s in the afternoon, and Mme Schnurr is the reverse. What does that mean for you? Nothing, other than Mme Schnurr will be the homeroom teacher for the Grade 3 students and I (Mrs. Chalmers) will be the homeroom teacher for the Grade 2 students. What does that mean?????? Well....again not a lot, except that we ask that you connect with your homeroom teacher about general questions or concerns and that book orders go through your homeroom teacher (Mrs. Chalmers for Grade 2 and Mme Schnurr for Grade 3).
If you have any questions at all please let us know and we will be happy to figure things out together!!!!
Love,
Mrs. Chalmers

Fresh Grade is COMING!!!
This year Mrs Chalmers and I will be using Fresh Grade to share marks, rubrics, anecdotal notes AND messages/communication with you. It will be our MAIN means of communication, besides this website and daily planners. The messaging available in Fresh Grade will allow us to send reminders like "field trip tomorrow" or "Library on Thurs", etc Forms will be coming home with your INDIVIDUAL access code on it. PLEASE sign up for Fresh Grade. If you signed up for Class Messenger, please ignore. As that was a system we used last year and we accidentally didn't delete it. So sorry. we will NOT be using Class Messenger.
